With the launch of the 1986 VFR750FG Honda initiated what was to become a very successfuland long running range of bikes. The following year (1987) saw the arrival of the VFR750FH which although visually identical to the FG did have several minor engine mods.
The first re-design of the bike was in 1988 with the launch of of VFR750FJ, this bike remained basically unchanged the following year as the VFR750FK.
Due to some protectionist legislation by the "land of the free" to protect its ailing motorcycle industry the VFR750FJ and FK were the only VFR models which were not available in the USA.
While sharing the same engine and frame as the FG and FH models there were a number of significant differences introduced on the FJ and FK models.
Engine
Compression ratio was increased from 10.5:1 to 11:1 and bigger valves were fitted. This increased peak power to a claimed 105bhp and peak torque to 7.8kgm at 9000rpm.
There was a complete re-design of the gearshift mechanism to giver smoother gear changing.
The original camshaft mounted ignition trigger was replaced by a crankshaft driven unit.
Forks
Increased from 34 mm to 41mm diameter. Anti-dive retained on left hand fork leg.
Wheels
The 16inch front / 18 inch rear combination were replaced by two 17inch wheels with a new three spoke design using S" shaped spokes. The wheels sported 110/80 Bridgestone G547 front and 140/80 Bridgestone G548 rear.
Fairing
The three part fairing of the FG/FH was replaced by a four part fairing comprising top section, bellypan and two side panels. This made for easier access to the engine. The top fairing incorporated new front indicators streamlined into the fairing and a two position adjustable front screen. Filler panels now covered the gap between the fairing and the frame.
Exhaust
The four-into-two system of the FG/FH was replaced with an all new four-into-two-into-one-into-two system which featured a collector box mounted in front of the rear wheel with right-angled pipework to the two silencers which were fitted with alloy sleeves.
Brakes
The FJ/FK were fitted with improved Nissin callipers, the front units being retained for the FL model.
Footrest/exhaust hangers
The painted metal items on the FG/FH were replaced by alloy units.
Instruments
The instrument layout was revised and a digital clock was added.
Colour Schemes
Three colour schemes were available
White with white wheels, blue seat and gold VFR decals.
Red with white wheels, red seat and white VFR decals.
Black with gold wheels, black seat and gold VFR decals.
And thus the best just got better.....
